Hane Lake Press

Independent publisher of thoughtfully crafted books

Hane Lake Press is an independent publisher based in Florida, producing a small number of carefully curated titles each year. We are dedicated to Southern stories rooted in place, memory, unforgettable characters, and the natural world—especially those shaped by Florida’s landscapes, wildlife, and cultural history.

Founded by artist, author, and publisher Amanda McCallister, Hane Lake Press exists to give focused, intentional attention to books that might otherwise be overlooked: art-driven works, place-based narratives, and projects that sit at the intersection of storytelling, environment, and visual culture. For authors interested in working with us, visit our submission guidelines or learn more about the publisher. For authors considering publication, we also offer author resources that outline our approach, expectations, and publishing values.

This is not high-volume publishing. It is careful publishing.

Books That Belong to the Landscape

Hane Lake Press publishes books that treat the South not as a backdrop, but as a central character—its waterways, wildlands, communities, and contradictions preserved through words and images.

Our catalog includes:

  • Lake Front: At the Edge of Nature and Nostalgia, a photographic, poetic, and culinary meditation on Florida’s Chain of Lakes and the quiet tension between development and memory.

  • Where the Florida Things Live, a whimsical yet reverent illustrated book inviting readers of all ages to fall in love with Florida’s wild residents.

  • Florida Field Guide, Part I (forthcoming 2026) The first installment in a multi-volume visual field guide, featuring 110 digitally rendered proofs from the Florida Field Guide series bridging natural history, conservation, and contemporary art.

  • Clown Paint and Gator Bait (forthcoming 2026) A Florida gothic thriller about love, obsession, and the terrifying cost of being seen.

  • The Reason for the Seasons (forthcoming 2026) A new title currently in development under the Hane Lake Press imprint.

Each title is created with the same guiding principle:
to document what is worth remembering before it disappears.

Art-Forward. Place-Driven. Purposeful.

Hane Lake Press was built to support books that blur traditional boundaries between art and literature, documentation and imagination, education and emotion.

We believe:

  • Place shapes story

  • Visual language matters

  • Regional voices deserve national respect

  • Publishing can be both beautiful and meaningful

Our projects are developed slowly, intentionally, and with deep respect for craft whether that craft is writing, illustration, photography, or design.

Looking Ahead

Hane Lake Press is a growing imprint with a long view. Future projects will continue to center Southern landscapes, environmental narratives, and artist-led books that resist trend cycles in favor of lasting relevance.

  • We publish selectively.

  • We collaborate thoughtfully.

  • And we build books meant to live on shelves and coffee tables, not just screens.
